Book Nook - Sewing In A Straight Line

My, the past two weeks have flown by and it's time for another Book Nook!  Our selection for this installment is Sewing In A Straight Line  by Brett Bara. 

Brett Bara is the host of Knit and Crochet Now on PBS and she also writes a regular sewing column, Sewing 101, for the Design Sponge blog

At first glance, I thought most of the projects would be clothes, but there are sections on home decor and easy gifts as well!  As with any good sewing book, Brett walks you through getting started first - tools & supplies needed, basic sewing techniques, etc.. Then, the fun begins!  All of the projects are made with pieces that are easily cut out with a rotary cutter, ruler and cutting mat - love it!  It's such a time saver!  There are also how-to illustrations for each project as well. 

My two favorite projects in the book are the Folded Flower Bowls and the Wonky Diamond Quilt - I have some cute vintage fabric that I have been dying to find a cool project for, and now I have two!  Even if you're an advanced sewist, I think you'll still find several projects to love in this book.

A Plethora of Pillowcases!

We had an amazing response to the April Friday Night Sew In challenge that Heidi posted.  We received a total of 174 pillowcases here at Arrow!  Many folks actually sent us entire boxes of cases - their compassion for the kids really warmed our hearts.  THANK YOU from everyone here at Arrow for helping us support this wonderful cause! 

It's time to announce our second winner, randomly drawn from all of the FNSI entries we received - it's Sandy Rowe from Pasco, WA!  Sandy sent in lots of cute pillowcases for Conkerr Cancer - thanks so much Sandy!  We'll be sending her this awesome rolling tote for her efforts!

Book Nook - The Sewing Bible

It's Wednesday, so that means it's Book Nook time!  Today we're talking about The Sewing Bible by Ruth Singer!

Ruth is a fabulous textile designer and also teaches workshops, so she knows what she's writing about!  The book starts off with practical techniques which go from setting up a sewing space to mastering invisble zippers.  Then Ruth dives into decorative techniques, like ruffles, scalloped edges and American smocking, and she finishes with a section on incorporating the techniques. There are cute projects included throughout the book, and lots of photos.  I found the interfacing guide in the back of the book to be very helpful as well.  My goal is to finally master the invisible zipper, and I think this book will help me get there!
