We loved all of the great recipes we received today - thanks so much for sending them in! Our winner is Suzanne Melkoski from Colorado - we loved her recipe and the cute story that went with it:
Martha Washington Candy - By George!
My grandma used to make this candy at Christmas time....she called them Martha's Balls...but one year she put a twist on them and I overheard telling the adults they were...George's balls.....she just called them balls after that to keep things simple. She added the cherries in the center thus the "George" part.....you know, chopping down the cherry tree and all. She was a hoot!! I miss her so much...here is her recipe!!
George's Balls - From my granny!!
2 pounds powder sugar
1 can sweet condensed milk
2 cups coconut flakes
1 stick softened butter
2 1/2 cups chopped pecans
paraffin wax
large Hershey bar -
you need 12 oz. of chocolate
cherries - drained and cut in half
Mix powder sugar, milk, coconut, butter and pecans together in large bowl. Take a piece of cherry and wrap inside a spoonful of dough mixture, roll into balls. Chill until hard.
Melt one cake of paraffin and chocolate over a double boiler, once melted, using a toothpick, dip balls in chocolate and let cool. Store in air tight container.
We had these at Christmas time every year.....a family favorite......maybe I should make a batch for presidents day!!
Congratulations Suzanne!
