Cases For ConKerr Cancer Contest!

A few weeks ago, we took a little trip with the wonderful folks from the Madison Chapter of ConKerr Cancer.  ConKerr Cancer is a non-profit organization that makes & delivers bright and cheerful pillowcases to pediatric cancer patients all over the U.S, and in several other countries as well.  Hether, Jo & Joy travelled to The American Family/University of Wisconsin Childrens'
Hospital in Madison, WI with Madison Chapter coordinator Joleen Adkins to sew with the kids and help deliver pillowcases.  They so enjoyed seeing the smiles that a fun and cheerful pillowcase can bring!

Right now, the Madison Chapter is in need of holiday/winter-themed pillowcases for the kids, along with fun pillowcases that would be suitable for boys.  In order to help them out, we're sponsoring a little contest!  If you send us a holiday/winter-themed pillowcase AND a boy-themed pillowcase, you'll be entered to win one of three Gidget Sewing Tables.  That's right, we'll be picking three random winners from all of the pillowcase entries that we receive.  We'll need to receive the cases by Dec. 14th  so that we can deliver them to the Madison Chapter in time for the holidays.  Check out the rules below  and let's make those kids smile!

The Rules (please read carefully):

1.  Make one holiday/winter-themed pillowcase and one boy-appropriate pillowcase following the guidelines posted here on the ConKerr Cancer website:  http://conkerrcancer.org/pillowdirections.html  The Madison Chapter would love sports-related cases for the boys, especially Badgers or Packers ones!  Remember, these are for kids, so they should be bright and cheery!

2.  Wash your cases, seal them in a ziploc bag, and mail them to us at:

Our Suzi Winner!

Well, It Was Another Tough One....

National Sewing Month - Challenge #3

Okay, you should be wrapping up those entries for NSM Challenge #2, so it's time for Challenge #3!  We fell in love with the cute sewing boxes made from old tins that were featured in the latest issue of Sew News:

National Sewing Month - Challenge #2

By now you should all be wrapping up those entries for our first National Sewing Month Challenge.  The deadline is Friday Sept. 14th at 5 pm Eastern!  For our next challenge, we thought we'd motivate you to get ready for the winter holidays - they'll be here before you know it, and it's always nice to be ready ahead of time! For Challenge #2, we're asking you to sew up a winter holiday themed ornament, whether it be a cute star for your tree, or something pretty to tie on to a Hanukah gift.  Heck, if Festivus is your winter holiday of choice, you could make a Festivus ornament too! 

The prize for this challenge is this awesome June Tailor set - Press 'n Cut mat, thread organizer, bobbin organizer, and Button Bank.  Just think how organized you'll be!

 

Now the important stuff - The Rules:

 

1. Make a NEW ornament for the winter holiday of your choice from fabric.  There must be some sewing involved and it MUST be a new item made specifically for this contest.

National Sewing Month Sewing Challenge #1

September is National Sewing Month, and we are celebrating all month long with fun challenges and giveaways!  For our first sewing challenge, we read your suggestions, and decided on....

The Upcycled Clothing Challenge!

 

Get out those tattered jeans, those too-small t-shirts or that skirt you never wear, and make something new and fun!  For a little inspiration, how about these cute coin pouches made from dress shirt cuffs:

We spotted them on Camilla Fabbri's blog, Family Chic.  Aren't they adorable? Visit her blog for more fun ideas!  Be warned, you may spend hours checking out all of her great ideas!

1. Pick out a piece of used clothing, and take a picture of it before you cut it up!

 

2. Use that old piece of clothing to make something new.  The only restrictions are that the new project cannot be another article of clothing, or a purse (we've seen way too many upcycled purses - we're looking for something original)!.

National Sewing Month Pop Quiz Kickoff!

Our Friday Winner!

Another weekend has come and gone, and some of you may have some spare time on your hands if your kids have started back to school!  It's the perfect time to start thinking about all of those sewing projects you've been dying to get done.  This week's swag should offer our lucky winner a little inspiration: 

TWO great quilting magazines and an Arrow Bag.  Let's hope that Linda Kirby from Burlington, WI will have some time to kick back with her favorite beverage and enjoy them!  Congrats Linda!

Book Nook - Sew Charming

Once again it's time for us to talk about another great book - Sew Charming by Cath Derksema & Kirsten Junor! 

Cath & Kirsten own an Australian fabric design studio aptly named "Prints Charming".  Their fabric is distributed by Marcus Fabrics, and they also hand print fabric for customers, make soft furnishings, gifts and clothing, and teach classes.  Their designs are so colorful and vibrant!

Now, this is not your ordinary sewing book.  It's going to take you in a direction you may not have gone before - designing and screen printing your own fabric! As any good how-to book should, it starts off with the basics - the equipment you'll need, sewing basics, quilting basics, and an embroidery stitch guide.  After that, the next two chapters focus on screen printing.   Then it's time for the projects!  There are 40 in all, and they range from an embroidered heart pillow to brooches to a headboard - quite a variety!  They include three pattern sheets, and there are screen printing patterns in the book as well. 

It's not spiral bound, but it does have a handy flap on the cover that you can use to hold your place.  Even though we may not get adventurous enough to try screen printing, there are still some fun projects in the book that we're going to try out.  We'd like to give you a chance to try this book out, so we're excited that Potter Craft is generously donating a copy for us to give away! Well, Florie and Sewnatra did their best in the first ever Arrow Cabinets Olympics, but they just couldn't overtake our gold medal winner - Olivia!  It was quite a medal ceremony, and of course Olivia got a little choked up as she was awarded her medal.

Coaster Contest Winner!

We received some wonderful entries from our Summer Coaster Contest, so it was tough to choose a winner!  In the end however, this "juicy" coaster set from Carolina Moore had everyone's mouth watering!

Congratulations Carolina!  She told us that she used all solid fabrics, and pieced them together using an EZ Dresden ruler.  Aren't they adorable?  For her efforts, we'll be sending her a June Tailor Cut n' Press Mat and a Might Bright light!

Go For The Gold!

Here at Arrow, we think we make some pretty fabulous cabinets, and we have a hard time deciding which one we like best!  In the spirit of the Olympics, we thought we'd have a little friendly competition between three of our favorite cabinets - the Olivia, the Florie, and the Sewnatra - and we're going to let you be the judges!

Here's what you need to do:

1.  Head over to our Pinterest page at http://pinterest.com/arrowcabinets and "follow" us. 

2.  Once you've followed us, click on our "Go For The Gold!"  board and repin one of the three cabinets.  But remember - just repin one, and make sure it's the cabinet you really like!

3.   After the "closing ceremonies" on Sunday August 12th at 9 pm Pacific time, we'll tally up the judges scores and determine which cabinet takes home the gold! But the fun doesn't end there!  We'll pick one of the persons that repinned the winning cabinet, and they'll get to take home the gold too - the cabinet that they repinned!

It's hard to believe that in a few short weeks kids will be headed back to school.  Summer is winding down!  Don't worry though, because our Friday giveaways aren't! In fact, we're getting ready to send this great swag bag out to a lucky Facebook fan:

Book Nook - Dare To Be Square Quilting

Have your blocks gotten blah?  Have your squares lost your sass?  Well then, you need to check out Dare To Be Square Quilting by Boo Davis!

Boo is a designer, illustrator, and heavy metal fan that began quilting in college.  Her quilts have appeared in Revolver, Bust, How and British Vogue.

Dare To Be Square starts off the way any good quilting book should - with a refesher on material, tools & equipment, and designing, making, signing and caring for your quilt.  We especially liked the section on using a design wall to help you select and position fabrics for your project. 

Once the basics are covered, it's time to dive into the projects!  There are instructions  for 10 quilts (including the adorable owl on the book's cover, and there are also instructions for 12 projects.  We're very fond of the Gridlock Grocery Getter!  The quilts and projects are all made with squares and rectangles, so they're very easy to put together.  Don't let the easiness of the projects fool you - they really are very cool and will have you thinking about squares in a whole new way!

Summer Coaster Contest

Summer's here!  That means sunny days, balmy nights, and . . . . sweaty glasses!  We don't want to let those cold beverages put a ring on your furniture, so we're challenging you to a little contest.  We'd love to see you make a set of four fruit-inspired coasters.  Why fruit?  Well, we fell in love with these cuties over on  Purl Soho's blog, The Purl Bee:

 

Aren't they adorable?  They've got tons of other great ideas on their blog too!  The next time we're in New York, we know exactly where we're going - Purl Soho!  We want you to come up with your own fruity coaster creations, so put those thinking caps on.  We're sure that all of you have lots of great ideas and we can't wait to see them. 

The Rules:

1. Create a set of four fruit-inspired coasters. 

2. This must be a new project made especially for this contest.

3. Take a picture of them, and email it to rebecca@arrowcabinets.com by Friday, August 10th at 5 pm Eastern time.

4. The entries will be posted in a slideshow on the Arrow blog, and the winner anounced on Tuesday, August 14th.

5. The projects will be voted on by Arrow staff, and the project with the most votes wins!
